Giulia Mangoni

Italiano

Giulia Mangoni (Isola del Liri, 1991) explores the relationship between material and immaterial culture, constructing layered pictorial narratives that oscillate between vernacularity and sacredness. Her practice stems from her connection to the landscapes of the Global South, combining traditions linked to her dual heritage between America and southern Italy. In works realized for ExtrArtis, the artist explores the dimension of the Genius Loci transforming the artist residency into an affective geography, where color becomes memory and painting an act of care. In her paintings, tradition and contemporaneity merge into suspended images in which the two-dimensionality of the drawing acquires a third dimension in time determined by the characters who physically escape from the works, becoming bronze statues. The artist transforms the landscape into a mythical place inhabited by familiar and archetypal presences: the Penates, the Lares, the spirits of the house. His canvases evoke a magical realism where the light of the South becomes emotional and spiritual matter.
